Hoof trimming

Hoof trimming takes place every 6 weeks, if it is done regularly then the task is easier on the owner and the goat. You will need a pair of secateurs which can be purchased from a farm supplies shop. They are about £10.00 but will last you for years, I've had mine for 5 years now and I'm still using them. Next you need to catch your goat I find putting some concentrate in a bucket works well, and then you can slip on the goats lead. Be gentle, kind and patient letting the goat have some of the concentrate as a reward, you can deduct this from there rations later. Once you have caught the goat get some one to hold it while you trim the hooves and clean out any thing that is trapped between the soft area. Trimming is relatively easy cut outwards, trimming the hard nail level with the soft part of the foot. Do not cut the soft area if this happens by mistake treat with iodine. When all four hooves have been trimmed give your goat praise and lead him back to his pen.
